10 Theories That Sound True But Hard To Believe!

Posted on

Do you love science? The best thing about science is that all people there do not mind to confess if there is something wrong with their theory. It is why theories can change. It is because scientists keep refiguring their experiment and even keep doing the new research to make the old ideas incomplete. Besides, science may create busted theories, mistakes, and hoaxes.
It is surprising that these most innovative scientific researches were built from the questionable data. Well, we do not judge that these big concepts are 100% wrong. In fact, there were other more complete theories that can replace their positions for more reliable discovery.

10. Vulcan

Back in the nineteenth century, there was a theory of the Vulcan, a planet between Mercury and the Sun.  Urbain Jean Joseph Le Verrier, a mathematician who proposed this existence for the first time after he and other scientists could not explain about Mercury and its orbit. He argued that there would be some objects that could cause this to happen, like a moon or a small planet acts as the gravitational force. Also, he said that it was because of Vulcan, and soon after that, many amateur astronomers from Europe wanted to be part of this research.
The Better Finding:
In 1877, La Verrier died and the story of the new planet was still going on. But, without his presence to talk more about the existence of the planet, man popular astronomers started to doubt about his discovery. Therefore, many people abandoned his research in 1915. At that time, the general relativity from Einstein explained the reason for Mercury and the Sun.

9. Aristotle And The First Element To Form A Life

Which one do you think come first: A hen, or an egg?
Still, remember about this question? Well, it took thousands of years for scientists to deal with. A long time ago, they believed that life was from the elements without any form first through an egg, a seed, or others. The first scientist who learned about this theory was Aristotle. He believed that life comes spontaneously from any inanimate matter such as earth, mud, and slime when the sunlight exposed these things. His idea came out when he observed how the dead animal carcass started the new life of maggots and how the hull of a boat was full of barnacles.
The Better Finding:
Louis Pasteur, the popular scientists presented that meat in the sealed container would never make any maggots appear. Also, the use of microscope supported this research that not the spontaneous generation formed the same insects, but the reason was the airborne microorganisms.

8. The Earth Can Expand

Plate tectonics and the subduction concept are the two reasons that can determine the Earth and its behaviors. At the end of the 20th century, some scientists widely accepted the idea that the Earth could expand and increase its volume. The theory supported the existence of underwater mountains and continental drift.
The New Finding:
There was no absolute research to backlash the idea of Earth and expanding behaviors. No one could say that it was a wrong theory, up to now. But, many more advanced theories of plate tectonics could replace the theory above. Meanwhile, the theory about expanding Earth argued that once, the land was connected. The growing volume of this planet then created the mountains and oceans.

7. The Theory Of Phlogiston

Johan Joachim Becher expressed this idea in 1667. The theory of Phlogiston was about the idea that all objects were combustible. Each object was able to catch the fire. It was because these objects contained a special element known as phlogiston. It was no color, taste, or odor and it would be visible when the flammable objects like leaves or trees.
The New Finding:
The more experiments related to phlogiston, the more people doubted about this theory. One of the most significant experiments was when the scientists burned a certain metal; it gained weight, not losing it. If all about the release of Phlogiston happened during burning were true, the object would lose its weight. Oxidation was a new finding that could replace this theory.

6. The Theory Of Martian Canals

The scientists believed that Martian canals were the network of ravines and gullies on Mars back in the 19th century. Giovanni Schiaparelli was the first astronomer from Italia who “discovered” the canals. Besides, other stargazers could support his claim. When the scientists described the detailed map to trace their paths, it created wild speculation. They asked more about how this thing happened, the origins and even the user.
The New Finding:
Simply, scientists have proven that the canals were a myth with the use of larger telescope and imaging technology. In fact, the heavy winds made the dust across the surface of the planet to create an optical illusion that scientists thought it was the canals. In the 1960s, the unmanned spacecraft made the flybys over Mars for the first time and captured the surface to prove that the theory was wrong.

5. Aether

It is also known as ether. It was the mysterious substance many scientists believed it was something to transmit the light through the universe. The light could not work without a delivery system. If the ether were the physical substance even in the vacuum, it would be easier to measure and quantify the deep space.
The New Finding:
Since the scientists did an experiment about diffraction and refraction of the light, the theory then outdated.

4. Blank Slate Theory

This is one of the most controversial theories in philosophy and psychology which was also popular as a tabula rasa. The theory revealed that people were born without any built-in personality traits. The support of this theory went from Aristotle, St. Thomas Aquinas and even John Locke. They believed that the metal content was all from education and experience.
The New Finding:
It took many years for the scientists to prove that there was a connection between genes, family traits, and birth when it comes to human behaviors. For example, the way you smile and the certain features in your language can be different from other people in the other worlds due to the different cultures.

3. Phrenology

In its era, phrenology was known as one of the most popular branches when it comes to neuroscience. Many people learned about it quite well. Most of them believed that character traits like intelligence or aggression can be allocated to any specific parts of our brain. The phrenologists also believed the size of your brain part can determine your behaviors. Therefore, they learned about the size and the shape of a human’s head.
The New Finding:
The end of this theory was back in the 1900s. The support of the more modern science showed that nothing could detect or identify personal behaviors in certain parts of the brain.

2. Einstein And The Universe

Before scientists believed that the universe was from the Bing Bang, generally, they had believed that the universe was from the unchanging constant. The size would be the same. This theory was so popular as Einstein’s Universe.
The New Finding:
This theory had its problem since its very first beginning. For example, if the universe were finite, it would become so dense. Therefore, it could collapse into the giant black hole. This problem has been compensated by Einstein’s principle named the cosmological constant.

1. The Theory of Cold Fusion

To create nuclear energy, generally, we need extreme temperature just like the power of the sun. But, this theory explained that to create this reaction, the most possible is at room temperature.
This concept is so simple but deceiving. Yet, it offers spectacular implications. Once the nuclear reaction could happen at room temperature, a human could create a lot of energy without using dangerous waste due to nuclear power plants.
Back in 1989,  Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons reported their experimental results about achieving cold fusion, excess energy to produce and their experiment of Palladium. After all, many people believed that cold fusion energy could be the best solution to create clean, cheap, and a lot of energy.
The New Finding:
With the overwhelming news exposed to the theory, a lot of scientists wanted to prove it but they always failed. They could not get the same result that they learned the detailed of the proposals for the theory above. Sadly, Fleischmann and Pons were the two to blame because both of them were sloppy, used unethical science, too. On the other hands, many scientists still go with them. They argued there was nothing wrong with the research. Therefore, in recent years, scientists did their experiment again to find the new ways about tabletop nuclear reaction and they have achieved great success.
